August 2003 House Corporation President Update

Back Again

I know, I fell behind on these monthly updates. I am now settled into Chicago after resigning from American Airlines a couple months back and that will be my excuse for anyone who is looking for one. After spending six years at AA between Revenue Management and a more enjoyable stint in technology with AA.com, I decided it was time to take a job with the king of pop-up advertising. Yes I realize my new employer’s pop-up banners can annoy some but that’s not my job so don’t bother sending any complaints my way.

A lot has happened since my last update: Eta Iota turned 34, a new class of Spring initiates filled some of the voids left by a rather large departing class of graduating seniors, and up in the northeast, House Corp has been undergoing a thorough financial check-up thanks primary to the tremendous efforts of Mike Gehman…more on that below.

I recognize that communication has not been what I would call timely over the past few months except for the occasional updates in the online guestbook but I expect that to change. At this year’s House Corporation annual meeting, we reviewed our plans for a communication campaign that we are calling “Relive the Experience”…you will see why. You will be receiving more information in the coming weeks as this campaign kicks off but I think everyone will enjoy the concept.

Again, thanks to everyone for your continuing support! On to the updates…

Finances Update

I am pleased to report on the hard work and dedication of House Corp’s Treasurer, Mike Gehman, and all of his recent accomplishments since taking over our books. Mike called me last summer with some ideas and suggestions for how we could become more efficient and bring attention to a few areas that House Corp has not, until now, had the time nor resources to really provide the level of attention necessary. Over the past several months, Brother Gehman has accomplished many more tasks than anyone else on House Corp has been able to do in several years and I want to thank him for that. Great job Mike!

Volusia County Alumni Chapter

Back in Florida meanwhile, a handful of dedicated local alumni have organized the Volusia County Alumni Chapter with the help of Grand Praetor, Julio Varela. We all knew Julio was about to give birth to something any time now. For those who are members of local alumni associations elsewhere in the country, you recognize the value of these groups so it is great news to finally have one off the ground so close to Eta Iota. For more information on the V.C.A.C, visit their website at daytonasigs.com or drop Julio an email at jvarela@sig1855.com.

2003 Wings & Waves

If you missed last year’s performance of the national lesbian skydiving team, book a room in Daytona for November 7 – 9, 2003 as one can only imagine what they’ve got planned for this year’s celebration of 100 Years of Flight! Sponsored in large part by Embry Riddle, this year’s festivities promise a dose of Sigma Chi with the activities of our annual homecoming along with many more events for the centenial of flight.

Prelimiary info from ERAU is available online at erau.edu/wingsandwaves. House Corp and the active chapter are also currently at work planning events around the house during this weekend. You will soon be receiving more information from the active chapter but in the meantime, mark your calendars and save the date!

New Payment Options for the 1855 Club

I’m proud to report that as the 1855 Club continues to grow year after year, we have also introduced additional ways to become a members. For those of you who have not yet joined or would like to renew an annual membership, we have introduced new options to make joining easier than ever before!

You can now join using any of the following methods:

  1. The original method of automated, monthly drafts from your checking account
  2. Most banks now offer online Bill Pay services where you can designate House Corp as an automatic payee for monthly amounts
  3. You can use one of two credit card features we have online whereby you make a one-time payment or set up any major credit card for automatic monthly payments.
  4. Of course you may also send a check for the full amount to House Corp for an annual membership.

For complete information and membership options, please visit etaiota.org/1855club/1855club.shtml.

To date, the program has raised nearly $30,000 thanks to the continuing support of our members. Just in the past couple months, several new members have signed up and I would like to thank Neil Campbell, Chris Nevins, and Mike O’Donnell for their ongoing support.

Guard Well,
