Announcements & Birthdays

From the desk of the Prez – Bonds of Brotherhood:

Does it feel like time just slips away? Wasn’t Birthday just last week? Where does the time go? As the months/years fly by it seems the less and less time we have to stay connected with each other. This is no more apparent than the list of lost brothers. We all know we’re a small chapter, yet we have a rich history. Personally, that’s one of the greatest assets of our chapter. We’ve earned 17 Peterson Significant Chapter Awards, 2 Legion of Honor awards, a Public Relations Award, 2 Character in Actions, and countless Grand Consul’s Citations. Eta iota also has produced 2 Significant Sig Awards; Brother John Bailey `75 and most recently Brother Hugh Mills `74, our White Cross has gained new luster by their lives….Not Bad for 38 years.

Despite all of this, as well as an undying devotion to our order we still have almost 100 Eta Iota Sigs: Lost.

Over the past two months Seth Downs, Bill Palmer, Jon Wrightington and others have “Cut Loose” so to speak, implementing new/exciting programs to reconnect our chapter. Communication is the name of the game now, and I’m proud to formally announce our 5 year captains:

`70-`74 Mike Wyble
`75-`79 Dave Fraser
`80-`84
`85-`89 Jeff Penn
`90-`94 Brian Lojko
`95-`99 Curt Kienast
`00-`04 Jason Kreisher
`05-`09 Nick Weiss

Brother Hugh Mills (HI’74) wins Significant Sig Award

Brother Mills will be inducted as a Significant Sig on Friday, July 3rd, at the 77th Grand Chapter. During the 39 years of Eta Iota’s existence, we have only been recognized for one Significant Sig, Brother John Bailey’ 75.

I am humbled to have nominated Hugh for this great honor and am thrilled that he will finally be recognized for the tremendous sacrifices he has made for his community and our nation.

Brother Mills attended Officer Candidate School in the height of the Vietnam war. He was selected for Flight School and received his Army Aviator Wings as a helicopter pilot. At age twenty, he commanded a squadron of ten aircraft, and twenty young men in combat.

Monthly Emails

It has been a long time coming, but the monthly updates are back.  I have always heard requests for better communication from the House Corporation with the Eta Iota alumni base.  It might take a few months to be fully up to speed with these updates; we have some catch up to do for the lack of information in the past few years.  In preparation for writing this email, I took a few minutes to review the last monthly updates, newletters, etc., that both the House Corporation and undergraduate chapter have.  In a nut shell, we (your House Corporation) have done a terrible job at getting information out to our alumni, and for that I deeply apologize.

Back Again

I know, I fell behind on these monthly updates. I am now settled into Chicago after resigning from American Airlines a couple months back and that will be my excuse for anyone who is looking for one. After spending six years at AA between Revenue Management and a more enjoyable stint in technology with AA.com, I decided it was time to take a job with the king of pop-up advertising. Yes I realize my new employer’s pop-up banners can annoy some but that’s not my job so don’t bother sending any complaints my way. Continue reading

Happy Holidays from House Corporation

As this time of year is upon us once again, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our brothers and their families a safe and enjoyable holiday season. With 2002 having both it’s highlights and unfortunately, unavoidable tragedies, it has been a memorable year and one that reminds us of the strength in the bonds of our brotherhood and the underlying purpose of Sigma Chi Continue reading

New look for etaiota.org

Our esteemed Webmaster, Bill Palmer and I have been throwing around ideas for improving our website and have already begun rolling out some of the changes. You’ll notice changes to the site upon your next visit that we hope you will find useful:

  • New homepage – We have grown over the years and so has our homepage. We have cleaned up the content and improved the legibility with a crisp look & feel.
  • Header images – New header images have been added for each of the main sections of the site. You will find different images appearing in the top-left corner of your browser window depending on which area of the site you are viewing.
  • Standardized navigation – You will notice that every single page has a standard navigation bar along the top edge. With this, you can get to any area of the site very easily and with only a couple of clicks. This nav bar has links to the homepage, the undergraduates’ site, our membership directory, current and past newsletters (both printed & email versions), The 1855 Club section, our very popular guest book, job listings and the photo album.
  • Style sheets – We are moving towards using style sheets on more and more of our pages. That basically means more consistent (and thereby more readable) pages.

Spaghetti Dinner a Success

The kitchen at the house was stirring during the day of the 20th as actives and past Sweetheart’s together tackled the task of preparing a spaghetti dinner for prospective members, active brothers and alumni, from both Eta Iota and elsewhere.

As has become tradition, Alumni came to the house on this night to have an opportunity to speak with ERAU undergrads interested in our Fraternity and share some of the experiences that we have been fortunate enough to have as Sigma Chis. Among those in town included Jeff Fejfar and his fiancé, past International Sweetheart, Wendy Papson, Grand Praetor and past Chapter Advisor, Julio Varela, past Chapter Advisor Kent Krause, Roger Moody, Chris Edmondson, Bob Weisenseel, Brian Lojko, and myself. The night was a huge success due to preparation of the actives and the positive turnout of alumni to support the event. Special thanks again to everyone who’s hard work was very much appreciated, including Continue reading

Latest Newsletter Online

The latest semi-annual printed newsletter was mailed out recently and the online version has been posted on etaiota.org. You can access the online edition as well as past issues and the monthly emails at WWW.ETAIOTA.ORG/NEWSLETTERS.

A couple minor errors have surfaced since the newsletter was printed: the officer index on the front page should read “2002” instead of “2001” and our current treasurer, Mike Gehman’s, email address should be “mikegehman@attbi.com” Continue reading

Final Call for Printed Newsletter

We are putting the finishing touches on the next printed newsletter scheduled to mail next week.
If you have any alumni updates, please send them as soon as possible to John Banta. We have received only a handful so far so we may omit the section altogether if there is no significant response.
Also, you will ONLY get a printed newsletter if you profile specifically requests one. Of the 600 or so members, only a couple hundred have asked that they still receive a paper newsletter. Those who do not get one will still have access to an electronic version that will be posted on etaiota.org. Check below for instructions on how to verify if you will receive a paper copy.
