House Corporation June / July 2011 Newsletter

Brothers,

Happy 4th of July Brothers and Happy 156th Birthday to Sigma Chi.  After taking a look at last month’s email, I realized I never sent out last month’s update.  So there are a number of things I must bring you up to speed on.  First, congratulations to everyone, especially the efforts in last year’s Board of Directors and Trustees on winning the 2011 Outstanding House Corporation Award.  Not only were we the only school in Florida but the only corporation in the South Eastern United States to be bestowed this honor.

Let me begin with a hardy Happy New Year and best wishes to you and your families in this coming year. I hope everyone had a save holiday season filled with much rejoice. I would be remiss if I did not apologize for my lack of communication to you all over the past three months. My efforts have been directed more at undergraduate successes and overseeing the improvements at our beloved house. This is no excuse for not informing you, our alumni Brothers, as to the conditions at 520 S Ridgewood via monthly e-mail updates. I will do all I can to correct these action in the months to come. I appreciate your patience and continued support over the past year. If you have not received any monthly updates I implore you to visit www.Etaiota.org and update your email/contact information. We, your House Corporation, continue to be steadfast in our mission to improve the living and educational experience of the current undergraduate chapter. We will continue to build toward tomorrow while respecting our historical legacy. Continue reading

House Update

All in all a pretty slow month at the house.  The undergraduates have done some major landscaping this month.  The grass is green and alive (which doesn’t sound like much, but it is light-years forward from where we have been in the past).  They have also overhauled the planting beds; digging them out completely, laying down new weed-block fabric, removing the old wood that lined the beds and installed new, repainting the house walls that were stained from the old bushes and finally they will beginning to plant scrubs/bushes in these beds in the next few days.  Some limited funds from the alumni have been allocated with some stipulation ensuring the survival of these plants over time. The 1855 Club turns 9 years old!!!

That’s right the 1855 Club was created in May 2000.  I asked John Banta to share some of his early thoughts in creating the 1855 club:

I took on the role of House Corporation President back in 2000 along with Brian Lojko as Vice President and we knew right away that Eta Iota was facing a challenge with long-term capital improvement savings.  Rental income from the undergraduate chapter covered mortgage payments, RMF Insurance premiums and the increasing maintenance costs but not much more.  Past fund-raising initiatives of the chapter such as the Eta Iota Honor Wall demonstrated what we already knew – Eta Iota consists of very generous members who want to support the chapter but a vehicle was needed to facilitate the process.
The idea for the 1855 Club originated as we explored the various fund raising options for Eta Iota’s capital improvement reserves and I wanted a solution that would meet several key criteria:
